Green Wave has been held as an environment conservation activity to commemorate the International Day of Biological Diversity (May 22) with the participation of many schools, mostly participants in the Children’s Forest Program (CFP) and organizations.
Since this year was the last year of the United Nations Decade on Biological Diversity, it was expected to be more exciting than ever. Due to the worldwide spread of Corona virus, however, schools were closed in many countries. Particularly during the Green Wave time from April to June, various regulations were tightened in the countries, and it has become difficult to tackle for many schools and communities as in the past.
In Indonesia which actively participated every year, as the number of infected people increased, strict regulations of movements and gatherings, and school closure have been taken. In the midst that mental exhaustion is widespread due to the news that amplifies anxiety and tension, OISCA local staff considered activities that can be realized even under Corona pandemic in hope of expanding positive feelings as much as possible. They consulted with schools and communities people concerned on the possibilities of carrying out activities for school children, students and also families even though they were not sure if they could get an approval. As a result, they received a lot of support much more than imagined. It is evident by the fact that the activities were carried out in 182 places, which is the largest number ever. There were many children who planted trees at home for the first time, and it became an opportunity to think about environment together with their families. Even for CFP coordinators and OISCA staff, it is rare to plant trees with their families, and it was a precious time unique to the stay home period.
Although the Green Wave activity was in danger of being realized, we also planted trees in other countries with a small number of people in consideration of safety. We created an opportunity to think about the environment and future of the hometown with people close to us, and provided bright topics to the communities while the dark news continued.
